I got a request from one business that has a list of 1,000 addresses and wanted flyers dropped at each specific address for less than the cost of a stamp. Think about it for a moment! A stamp costs .42 cents and he expected ‘courier’ service for less than the cost of a stamp.  I politely took a pass.  Later, I got a call from a woman who wanted to distribute 5,000 door hangers in L.A. but wanted to pay less than $700. OH! And she expected at least 700+ customers or would consider it a waste of money.  She went on to tell me about another company who offered her a $700 deal.  Yet, she didn’t stop there either. Now, she wanted to know what I thought about the reputation of the other company she was considering.  I told her that I don’t ‘trash talk’ my competitors.  Instead,  I provide detailed information on my services.  In turn, it was her job to research and draw comparisons. Ultimately, it’s her burden to determine which company would provide her the better service.

Got time for one more?! I received a call from another company seeking to sub-contract its 50K door-to-door hanger distribution. While they were billing out .40 cents per door hanger they were not willing to pay more than .7 cents to the sub-contractor.  Now, that’s what I call ‘Fuzzy Math.’

In short, I know the economy is tight.  Hey, it’s tight for everyone! However, I can’t in good conscience accept work that would not fairly compensate all my hard-working employees and contractors.

ADVERTISE before you go out of business!

Driving around this past week I noticed several neighborhood stores having their usual going out of business sale.  A few were legit but, most use the ‘Going Out of Business’ sale gimmick to draw in customers. Eh? Does that even make sense?! The fact is that it doesn’t have to make sense  as long as it works. These stores have figured out a strong call-to-action and are milking it all the way to the bank.  OK, think back… Have you ever noticed a furniture store that’s always advertising ‘Everything Must Go! Going out of business’? These sort of stores are all too common in NYC and many urban areas. The giant lettering on neon-bright banners stretching 10 feet long serve to hypnotize consumers and lure them right into the store.  Yes, it works! However, businesses shouldn’t rely on this gimmick and risk credibility.  Instead,  they should create a marketing program that fosters an honest relationship between them and their customers. There are several low-cost marketing options. At the core of shoe-string marketing is flyer distribution. We recently executed flyer distribution, door hanger distribution, and deployed human directionals (sign holders) for a long-time ailing giant, Circuit City. I kept asking myself  ‘Why did they wait so long?!’

In an age of MySpace, Yahoo!, Google, and countless other search engines marketing has widely gone viral. When consumers have access to an infinite amount of information both on the web and on their phones does flyer distribution or door hangers seem outdated? Sometimes attempting to convince a new customer about the advantages of flyer distribution and door hangers seems like an uphill battle. However, in all my years of Guerilla Marketing I can honestly say it’s the most cost-effective method of creating word-of-mouth buzz and a compelling call-to-action for just pennies. Printing is extremely inexpensive for 4 color, high-gloss flyers. You’ll spend more on the distribution than the cost of the actual flyer. Yet, utilizing a dependable, honest, distributor can make or break your campaign. In my early years of Guerilla Marketing I’ve seen flyers dumped in the trash. I wish I could say it’s not case anymore and it never happens. However, the best way to combat this problem is contracting a reputable flyer distributor who employs professionals and not folks looking to make a quick buck and paid in cash at the end of the shift. TIPS: When distributing flyers think grassroots! There’s no need to saturate a market where you already have a strong consumer base. Look for new consumers who are not familar your service/product.  Get creative and use sight, sound, and smell to attract consumers.
